Maniac's Paradise Lost

By Popular Demand

MPL By Popular Demand - the goal is to pick something that fits the
category and will be the "most popular" answer. You score points based on
the number of entries that match yours. For example, if the category is
"Cats" and the responses were 7 for Persian, 3 for Calico and 1 for
Siamese, everyone who said Persian would get 7 points, Calico 3 and the
lone Siamese would score 1 point. The cumulative total over 10 rounds will
determine the overall winner. Anyone may enter at any point, starting with
an equivalent point total of the lowest cumulative score from the previous
round. If a person misses a round, they'll receive the minimum score from
the round added to their cumulative total. And, if you want to submit some
commentary with your answers, feel free to.

Highest possible score was 30 with Marc and David gaining 30 points.

1 - Common Type of Surgery: This category was pretty much what I thought.
Heart surgery gets plenty of attention while there is an upswing in
interest in plastic/cosmetic surgery (even TV shows!). A smattering of
other entries was expected based on folks' personal and family experiences.
2 - Food Associated with Hospitals: I fully suspected Jello would be #1
with broth and ice cream making a minor showing. However, with the
tonsillectomy answer to the previous question, I'm surprised there wasn't a
popsicle thrown in!
3 - Reason for Emergency Room Visit: My first thought was heart attack and
I'm surprised that it was only submitted by one person. Car accident would
have been my second response. I hadn't thought of flu, but it isn't
surprising with the flu season upon us and the dire atmosphere the media is
creating over it.
4 - Title of Hospital Employee: No orderly? Also, I'm a bit surprised that
there wasn't more of a split between doctor and nurse, but obviously almost
everyone was thinking along the same lines.
5 - Famous Hospital/Clinic: For the US participants I expected a split
between Mayo Clinic and Walter Reed Hospital (primary stateside hospital
for military casualties), with the international players going for Mayo. I
was wrong again.

Player Commentary:

General: [Lori] - this round was super-easy for me, being a retired
paramedic and having worked for many years in a hospital ER.

1 - Common Type of Surgery: [Marc] could be appendectomy but the general
term plastic surgery seems more common and likely to be picked. Then,
again, after last round, who knows! [Lori] another possible answer is
tonsillectomy, but appendectomy came to mind first. I thought about
transplant surgeries, too, but there are too many to choose from these
days. [Fred] arthroscopic knee surgery (note: while cataract surgery may be
more common, that type of surgery is now being done on an out-patient basis
99% of the time). [Dave] I've only done knees myself. [Brendan]
hmmmm....American audience...must be PLASTIC! (for Japanese audiences I
think hymen reattachment would win....)
2 - Food Associated with Hospitals: [Marc] could be unanimous...I think so.
[Lori] Jello was the only possible answer for me. [WAY] and just about
everyone else!. [Dave] they have FOOD in hospitals? Couldn't prove it by
me, I always have someone smuggle something in). [WAY] actually, hospitals
very quite a bit in the food they serve. I was a First Cook in a private
hospital many years back and made (for patients) London Broil, Lobster,
Cheese Souffles and many other dishes. [Brendan] is 'bland' a type of food?
Pureed? Boiled? Dull? Low-fat? Deep fried? What a difficult category. I'll
go with "Grapes".
3 - Reason for Emergency Room Visit: [Marc] so many options (heart attack,
broken bones, stitches), just have to pick something. [Lori] this one was
tough... fevers, burns, fainting, seizures, chest pain/heart attacks, CPR,
cuts, falls, strokes, gunshot wounds....a lot of stuff came to mind. But
just about everyone assumes that all car accident victims go to the ER, so
I figured this one would match the most people. The only real competition
in my mind was "seizures" or "heart attacks" but I doubted anyone else
would say those. They're too Emergency-Medicine-specific. I had a hard time
thinking outside of my own personal "experience-box" on this one. Good
question, by the way! I probably shot myself in the foot on this one...I
bet everyone will say "heart attacks". [WAY] - your instincts were spot on,
good reasoning! [Dave] drug overdose? [Brendan] car accident (as opposed to
getting Diplomacy fleet unit wedged up one's nose by opponent who took the
stab badly....)
4 - Title of Hospital Employee: [Marc] lots will say doctor, but there
aren't many doctors employed by hospitals anymore (not enough money in that
I'm sure). So if not doctor, then how about nurse. [Lori] nurse was the
only thing I could think of without digging. I'm sure "doctor" will get
some responses, though. [Dave] orderly also comes to mind.
5 - Famous Hospital/Clinic: [Marc] some on the coasts may have different
ideas,, but in the Midwest the Mayo Clinic is the top dog. (I wonder if
anyone will take Cedars Sinai hospital?). [Lori] Mayo was the only place I
could think of, again, without digging deep. I finally came up with Johns
Hopkins...but EVERYONE knows Mayo around the world. [Brad] I'm sure you are
after an American hospital, but I don't know of any - so I will plug for
our local hospital. [Dave] Mayo (that clinic just screams for this one).
[Brendan] I guess Mt Sinai might do ok.... all US hospitals featuring on
the news seem to have name associated with Israel.
