Maniac's Paradise Lost

By Popular Demand

By Popular Demand - the goal is to pick something that fits the category
and will be the `most popular' answer. You score points based on the number
of entries that match yours. For example, if the category is `Cats' and the
responses were 7 for Persian, 3 for Calico and 1 for Siamese, everyone who
said Persian would get 7 points, Calico 3 and the lone Siamese would score
1 point. The cumulative total over 10 rounds will determine the overall
winner. Anyone may enter at any point, starting with an equivalent point
total of the lowest cumulative score from the previous round. If a person
misses a round, they'll receive the minimum score from the round added to
their cumulative total. And, if you want to submit some commentary with
your answers, feel free to.

1 - Type of Circus Performer - Clown was definitely going to lead the pack.
I didn't know if it was going to be a clean sweep or if some others would
be chosen. Almost unanimous.
2 - TV Drama Show - This was a wide open category, I didn't expect there to
be many matches and there weren't with ER being the only one with multiple
entries. It was one of a half dozen that I thought might do that (along
with JAG, Sopranos, Law & Order, C.S.I. and West Wing).
3 - Movie Series (three+ movies) - I expected Terminator, with the recent
release of T3, to sweep with the possibility of the Rings movies being
second. However, Star Wars seems to have stuck in folks minds.
4 - Music Style - Yep, Rock was #1 as anticipated. Personally, I listen
mostly to Country these days, though five years ago I would have turned the
station if it was on. I also listen to rock, alternative and just about
anything but Rap.
5 - Type of Gambling - Poker (Cards) was on my mind, with the lottery
coming up second.

Player Commentary:

1 - Type of Circus Performer - Conrad `wouldn't be surprised if unanimous'.
Brendan `trapeze artist/acrobat will do well too.' Mark `it's a tough call
between three for me: lion tamer, trapeze artist and clowns. I think
everyone remembers the clowns from the circus and thus it is the most
likely selection.' Paul `I really hate being so banal, but that is the
point, isn't it?'
2 - TV Drama Show - Brendan `just to be yankish.' Fred `I don't actually
watch `CSI' but I hear it has the top rating. The only serious drama I
watched on TV last season was `24'.' [WAY - didn't watch much `CSI' or any
`24'. For (non-syndicated) dramas I routinely watched `7th Heaven',
`Everwood', `West Wing', `Enterprise', `Law & Order', `Dragnet' and
`Touched by an Angel'.] Mark `I don't like ER anymore, but it really has
the best image of the TV dramas. (Personally I prefer 24).' Paul `or is CSI
now the in show? Or something else I never watch.' Tom `a classic, but I',
sure everyone else will put in something current - of which I have no
idea!' [WAY - you are correct, sir!].
3 - Movie Series (three+ movies) - Brendan `Star Wars will do well I think,
but who the heck is still hanging out for Episode 3 compared to those
hanging out for Return of the King.' [WAY - well, apparently more are
looking forward to Episode 3 than RotK!]. Mark `my favorite series is James
Bond, but in light of the dominance of SciFi in last months edition and the
absence of spy novels, I think that Star Wars is the obvious answer.
Although someone will come up with Star Trek.' [WAY - nope on the Star
Trek, but it was a definite possibility]. Paul `T4, the election of Arnold,
will be the most horrific of the lot.' Tom `or maybe that should be
Eastwood's spaghetti westerns?'
4 - Music Style - Brendan `The only music with style, he says
controversially....'. Fred `Likewise, my musical choice would be
Classical, but Rock seems to be the supreme choice these days.' Mark `This
was the most difficult answer. I fully expect a number of different answers
(possibly no agreement). Rock and roll, rap, country, blues, jazz and folk
are just the tip of the iceberg. So I went with my personal favorite.' Paul
`I guess `Gregorian Chants' would be a bit erudite for this crowd?' Tom
`Rap? no, not that. Your list of players has too wide an age range! Rock &
Roll might be a better choice, although I'm partial to Classic and
Baroque!).'
5 - Type of Gambling - Conrad `not quite sure what approach to take to
`type of gambling.' I thought at first of naming a specific Vegas-type
game, but in the end selected what I suppose is a `category' (lottery as
opposed to casino, race track, football pool...). Now just watch, everybody
else will say slots or stud poker and I'll sink even lower.' Brendan
`tempted to say `problem'. Will go with Casino, as opposed to lottery,
racetrack, sport totes, etc.' Mark `gambling, nothing like throwing in a
vice. Slot machines are by far the most popular casino game. However
gambling extends beyond casinos. Thinking back it seems that cards are the
most popular form (right after the NCAA pool!).' Mark `I think this will be
a controversial one. Various issues come to mind - would `sports' include
horse racing, football, basketball, or would a contestant need to chose
only one' If so, I choose horses. `Casino' gambling, or would one have to
choose among the various games, including craps, blackjack, roulette and
slots? If slots, would poker slots be a separate category? Card games -
which are casino games and which not; poker is the prime example. Would
`compulsive' be a valid answer?' Tom `or slot machines, or pull tabs, or
bingo, or blackjack, or...the list goes on...).'
