Me and my Nebula 1989 : the Nebula is the award given by the Science Fiction/Fantasy Writers of America in various caregories. I won it for best novel for THE HEALER'S WAR, my fantasy novel of the Vietnam war based rather loosely on my experiences in Nam as an Army Nurse. It was a very hard book to write and I greatly appreciate the honor.

Background is Todd McCaffrey, Anne's son and heir to Pern: Dragon's Kin and Dragon's Blood are terrific! Then there's me. I'm the one in the beadwork, of course. The gentleman is my jeweler friend Rick Reaser, the model for Captain Becker in the Acorna Stories. And then the silver haired woman in the dashiki-hmmm, can anybody place her? Something to do with dragons. Oh yes, Todd's mom! Now I remember, it's Anne herself. Anne McCaffrey.

In case you don't think I research my novels, here I am, as you can see from the sign clearly in harm's way at Point Barrow, Alaska, boning up (bones in the background but you may not be able to see) for the Petaybee books.

Writers are as faithful as postal employees any day about braving all sorts of weather to make their appointed rounds. Of course, snow is not really unusual weather but this picture was taken in July. It was at Point Barrow. The summers there are extremely short. This photo was taken while I conducted more Petaybean research on the same trip as the photo on the left.

This is me outside Drumlanrig Castle, clan seat for the Scotts and home of the Duke of Bucchleah, who was a very kind friend and patron of Sir Walter Scott, the historical detective protagonist of The Lady in the Loch. Scott did have a connection to law enforcement since he was a lawyer, as most people in Edinburgh seem to have been at one time, and a Sheriff as well!

Getting in the spirit of Channeling Cleopatra at a "Come with me to the Casbah" dance in the town where I live.
