Horse Feathers

The widest points of P3 are sometimes called
wings. The tips of these wings can be fractured.
A common treatment for wing tip fracture and
other P3 fractures is the application of a
continuous rim shoe, or a shoe equipped with
clips near the heels and quarters. Such a shoe
restricts the flexion of the hoof wall, thus
stabilizing the fractured bone within.

Shoeing for fractured P3 tips offers
a chance to test my feeling that many
hoof problems are opportunistic. I have
long felt that what is correctable through
shoeing was caused by shoeing. According
to widely held horseshoeing beliefs long
term fitting of a restrictive shoe and
limiting exercise should produce manifold
hoof problems. I have found this to be so
only when there is a predisposition
to the resulting problem.

Hooves of good conformation under otherwise
healthy horses seem stubbornly resistant to
influences that rapidly exacerbate hoof
problems of poorly conformed hooves.
This validates proactive shoeing.
