Presentation of Clinical Signs
We have known for some time that clinical signs present late in both of these disease processes. A "wait and see" approach can be costly. Early diagnosis and treatment are as beneficial to laminitic and foundering horses as for any other disease. The problem is that we have no diagnostic/evaluation standards applicable in the field for veterinarians. I suggest that we employ the same standards used throughout medicine. Specifically, biopsy the lamellar tissue to determine its current state (when appropriate), selection of therapies directed at either limiting or reversing the progress of the disease, monitoring and evaluating the therapeutic effects on the course of the disease.
