The Betty L is a joy to cruise with her easily driven hull
while her slow turning Gardner quietly chugs away.
Betty L was originally built in 1926 by a Nova Scotia shipbuilder Jule Robicheau. In 1936 she was brought through the Panama Canal to British Columbia where she fished for a London packing company until the mid 1950s. She is a strongly built wooden heavy displacement hull powered by a Gardner 6 cylinder diesel. Her Gardner marine engine has an exceptional reputation in the marine industry for reliability and fuel economy. From 2003-2005 an extensive restoration was done in Port Townsend, WA by a crew of shipwrights focusing on the hull, deck, interior, and many of the systems. Approximately 75% of the topsides plus a portion of the forefoot were replanked and reframed. The entire hull was then refastened and recaulked. The solid fir decking and beams from the front of house aft were repaired as needed then covered with new plywood and rubberized deck coating. The rudder shaft was replaced with 316 stainless steel plus new bearings.
Below decks a new hydraulic system was fitted and a complete new 24v/12v electrical system (inverter, alternators, panels, and batteries). All fuel tanks and thruhulls were cleaned and serviced. The fresh water and holding tanks were replaced. The interior has a new head with shower and Master Stateroom.
Accommodations:
Starting in the deck house there are two entry doors and many port lights and drop style windows for ventilation and viewing. Up forward there is a diesel stove and plenty of space to finish building out the galley. There is a convenient passthrough to the pilot house above. Going down the stairs to below decks there is immediately to the left a head with sink and shower. Moving forward there are two bunks in the main salon and a dining setee. Forward there is a new master stateroom with a double bunk with plenty of stowage. In the focsle there are two bunks, a ladder to hatch/skyligh, and room for cabinet and writing desk. Aft of the stair is the engine room with work bench and excellent lighting throughout. Aft of this is the stern lazarette with fresh and black water tanks which can serve as full size bunks with lots of room for stowage and/or equipment. The foredeck has plenty of uncluttered usuable deck space. The cargo mast makes bringing loads on deck easy with the help of the windlass capston. There is a large cargo hatch over the Salon. The Pilot House is accessible from a ships ladder off foredeck. There are plenty of windows for good visability and a chart table with two flanking seats. Engine controls and guages and nav equipment are in their usual places. Aft of the pilot house is a large deck for storing dinghys and or entertaining. The foredeck has alot open deck space for utilizing. The cargo mast is used with the windlass capstan for sweating up heavy loads. There is also a large removeable cargo hatch over the salon.
