A motion was made and seconded to drop Officer & Gentlemen and sanction the other 3 walks. Other suggestions were to have walks with Parks & Rec, Health Fairs, & Weight Watchers. George suggested the Lower Quail Trail by Quilcene and other walks along the river in that vicinity. There is plenty of parking and a restroom there. Another suggestion for an event by Kay was the Arts & Action in PA. It could be a 5 k and a 10 k to go along the waterfront and up the hill. OPE President Mary Allen Clark chaired the meeting. There were no new members present. There was distribution of the previous meeting's minutes (March 13, 2010); motion to approve the minutes by Jack Clark, second by Bob; the minutes were approved.
Treasurer's report: Janet Lenfant reported on the Club's current financial status / bank balance -which continues to be stable and satisfactory.
Ballots - Election of Officers for 2010/11: Ballots were distributed and collected for the nominated slate of officers: President (Mary Allen Clark), Vice-President (Bob Forcier), Treasurer (Janet Lenfant) and Secretary (Sharon Brant). There were no write-ins, so this slate was elected; two year term starts July 1st.

Old Business:
1) Need leader for June 26 Hurricane Hill walk - Victor McAllister volunteered

Workers' walk May 22 for Fort Worden - Mary Allen described PT ferry / transport of visiting Tulip Trekkers for this walk, which starts at Jefferson County Fairgrounds at approx. 11am. Frances gave out maps of the 5K / 10K walk route for the workers' walk.
Fort Townsend YRE maps and info will be available to the Triangle of Fire walkers, in case they want to add that as a fourth walk during their Memorial Day weekend.
4) Suggestions to improve Start / Check Points: Frances Johnson described the need for a helpful "host" volunteer at each walk's start point, to help meet / greet / explain walks to new walkers, plus assisting with the sign-in process and new walker packet distribution - this is too time consuming for the walk leader or President to do when other walkers are arriving and signing in, also. It would also be nice for Club members to walk with new walkers, introduce themselves, be friendly, etc.
5) Canadian Exchange 7/18: A coordinator is still needed for this event, to help plan food, walker transport, etc. Victor McAllister volunteered for this role, but since he might have to leave town then, a back-up volunteer is needed.
Gifts: Sharon Brant is planning on a lavender pin - other ideas welcome, too.
Walk Routes: short and long routes discussed, which include Robin Hill Park as start or end point.
Too many route options could cause chaos in trying to keep track of all walkers and their
transport and ferry needs.
Early Arrivals: George C. volunteered to lead walks for those who arrive a few days before event.
Hosts / transport: Contact Janet if you can host walker(s) in your home, or drive them around.
Lunch: There will be a BBQ potluck at Janet's home, an easy walk from downtown Sequim.
Submit food suggestions to Victor and Bruce. Bring salads and desserts, please
6) OPE Newsletter: There was discussion about reviving the old "Foot Prints" newsletter - is it worth the effort, is it really necessary, could a blog be established instead? Victor McAllister would like to try and produce a newsletter with small news items about club members, anecdotes, photos from walks, members' travels and distant walks, etc. They would probably be quarterly, by email. For members who don't participate often, or snowbirds, the newsletter would keep everyone "in the loop".
New Business:
Publicity: Volunteer still needed to take on this role - Janet gave job description, including computer
skills. This is a very important role - publicizing events, getting new walkers and members.
Anacortes invite: Sharon and Fred Fisher have invited the club members to their BBQ in Anacortes on
August 15th - coincides with 2 walks - Washington Park and downtown area.

The 5K route is not yet determined. The Kitsap Club is in charge of the Fort Flagler walk, where check in will be at the Jeffco Fairgrounds. Patches have been ordered, and permit fees paid. Meeting adjourned 1:05pm. Next meeting: May 8th, Port Townsend. / Sheila Everett, Secretary
OLYMPIC PENINSULA EXPLORERS
January 9, 2010 - Club Breakfast Meeting Minutes
The Crabhouse Restaurant, Port Angeles

Old Business:
1) Previous events: October 3rd Kinetic Event: Very successful walk, with about 100 walkers. Nov. Twilight Walk in Forks: A jovial group of about 106 attended, over 75% from off the Peninsula. No complaints or problems about these events reported / discussed.
2) 2010 Schedule:
The Forks YRE is ready. There was discussion about changing that walk from Oct. 9th to a summer date, but the idea was tabled.
Reverse Sol Duc: There was a motion by Richard, second by Janet, to reverse the Sol Duc walk - discussion with agreement followed - motion passed
by vote.
Hurricane Hill: There was discussion about removing the road section from this walk (from Lodge to starting point) . . . everyone agreed, so George and Richard will go up to the Ridge and make the change.
Volunteers signup up to be walk leaders / contacts for some of the upcoming Club Walks: Ft. Flagler Feb. 27 (Frances and Susan), PT Waterfront April 10 (Frances and Susan), Marymere Falls June 12 (George C.), PA Historic July 10 (Billie Grauberger).
2010 Sponsorships: Janet Lenfant said that sponsors are still needed for these three 2010 walks (Dungeness Spit, Fort Townsend, PT Waterfront) - Sheila Everett will sponsor the Dungeness Spit, so that leaves the other two walks needing sponsors.
New Business:
1) Triangle of Fire Event: (2 days, 3 Clubs, 3 separate walks over Memorial Day weekend May 29,30) OPE is sanctioned for 2 day event at Fort Worden. Kitsap Club is sponsoring Ft. Flagler, and the Tulip Trekkers are doing Fort Casey. Work on the brochure and routes still needs to be done. There was agreement that only one of these walks needs to be completed in order to earn a patch. For our OPE walk at Fort Worden, Frances said the starting point will be the Jefferson County fairgrounds, with a walk to Fort Worden. For those coming by ferry, a shuttle bus ride to the fairgrounds would be available. Frances and Bruce will work on the details for the brochure. The possibility of offering picnic food on the Monday was discussed - the members decided no, too involved . . . but maybe coffee and muffins could be offered.
ESVA: - The NW Pathfinder issue was presented by Bruce in great depth. It is a combined Wash/Oregon Publication, and many clubs want lots of free extra copies to distribute, but this is too expensive. There are several options to address this problem, but the one chosen by our club is that all clubs in good standing receive 5 free marketing copies, and ten copies for each event.
There was a motion by Frances Johnson, second by Jack, that our delegate Sharon Streitt vote for that option at the Jan. 30th ESVA meeting . There is a certificate in each new walker packet for three issues, also.

Next Meeting: March 13, 2010 John Wayne Marina walk with lunch afterwards - nomination meeting.
