Streamkeepers, Clallam County’s volunteer stream monitoring program, is seeking new volunteers to help collect stream health data, perform data entry & analysis, and conduct education & outreach.  As the program continues to expand, there is a continuing need for volunteers.

New volunteers join existing stream teams and perform quarterly stream monitoring and other stewardship activities, on streams throughout the county—or may volunteer to provide other kinds of program support, both outdoors and indoors.

The free training begins on June 23; no previous experience necessary.

To register or inquire, call Streamkeepers at 417-2281, or email streamkeepers@co.clallam.wa.us

Tree-planting Work Party!

box_top.gif

Please join North Olympic Land Trust for a tree-planting work party on Saturday, March 19, 2011.  The work sessions will take place from 10am-noon and 1pm-3pm.  The theme of the work party is “many hands make light work” as we have 400 trees to plant in some challenging soil.  We need as many hands as we can get!  We will also be installing plant protectors and mulching, so there is a job for everyone.

Location of the work party is at the Siebert Creek Conservation Area, at the end of Siebert Creek Road.  Siebert Creek Road is between Port Angeles and Sequim, off Highway 101 just east of the turn onto Old Olympic Highway.

Bring work gloves, shovels, and a wheel barrow if you can.  RSVP is appreciated but not necessary.  Call Lorrie Campbell at 417-1815x4 or email her at
lorrie@nolt.org.

EPA Accepting Applications for Environmental Education Grant Funding

WASHINGTON -The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting grant applications for $1.9 million in funding for environmental education projects and programs. The purpose of the grants is to promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers and citizens. EPA expects to award at least 20 grants nationwide ranging from a minimum of $15,000 to a maximum of $100,000 and will accept applications until May 2, 2011.

The grants provide financial support for innovative projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques. Projects should involve environmental education activities that go beyond disseminating information.

EPA will be hosting two conference calls for potential applicants interested in additional information about the application process. The conference calls will take place on March 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and April 6 at 2 p.m. (EDT). To participate in the conference calls, dial: 1-866-379-5082, and use conference ID number: 48699133 for the call on March 21. Use conference ID number: 48696117 for the call on April 6.

The Environmental Education Grant Program provides funding to local education agencies, state education or environmental agencies, colleges or universities, not-for-profit organizations, or noncommercial educational broadcasting entities. Tribal education agencies, which are controlled by an Indian tribe, band or nation, may also apply, including a school or community college.

Since the program began, EPA has provided more than $50 million in funding to more than 3,000 agencies and organizations.

CITIZENS INVITED TO ATTEND STORMWATER MANAGEMENT MEETING ON February 28, March 2, March 7th

Clallam County and a convened stakeholder group of citizen representatives and local parties have been working for nearly a year to develop a comprehensive stormwater management plan for Clallam County.  The purpose of the plan is to address the undesirable effects of stormwater associated with development, including flooding, erosion, and water quality degradation. Stormwater management is particularly critical for Clallam County because trends in population growth and associated development suggest a continued increase in stormwater runoff, impacting water quality and quantity, habitat, water resources, and property. Clallam County and the Stormwater Work Group have a draft plan ready for public review and comment.  While there have been ongoing meetings open to the public, this is a special opportunity to become introduced to the draft Clallam County Comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan. Please come to one of the following public meetings, each from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m:

Monday, February 28 at the Guy Cole Convention Center in Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Road, Sequim

Wednesday, March 2 at the DNR Olympic Region Office Conference Center, 411 Tillicum Lane, Forks

Monday, March 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 East 4th Street, Port Angeles

The draft Clallam County Comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan will be posted on February 17 at  http://www.clallam.net/realestate/html/stormwater_management.htm.  Comments on this draft plan will be due March 17 to Carol Creasey, Clallam County Department of Community Development, at stormwater-comments@co.clallam.wa.us.

For more information, see http://www.clallam.net/realestate/html/stormwater_management.htm or contact Clallam County Department of Community Development at 360-417-2416.

On behalf of the Estuary Habitat Restoration Council, NOAA Fisheries Service is soliciting proposals for estuary habitat restoration projects.  The Council anticipates up to $7 million may be available for funding; awards are expected to range between $100,000 and $1 million.

Selected projects must provide ecosystem benefits, have scientific merit, be technically feasible, cost-effective, and support the Estuary Habitat Restoration Strategy. Priority consideration will be provided to project proposals that:

  • Are designed to address projected climate change impacts;
  • Occur within a watershed where there is a program being implemented that addresses sources of pollution and other activities that otherwise would adversely affect the restored habitat; and
  • Include pilot testing or demonstration of an innovative technology or approach having the potential to achieve better restoration results than conventional technologies, or comparable results at lower cost in terms of energy, economics, or environmental impacts.

Proposals selected for funding may be implemented through a cooperative agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) or NOAA; or in accordance with a cost-share agreement with the Corps, subject to availability of funds.  For the purposes of this solicitation estuary habitat includes the estuary and its associated ecosystems, such as any portion of a river or stream that is tidally influenced as well as shellfish beds, sea grass meadows, and kelp beds.  Proposals are due by March 10, 2011 through Grants.gov.

For more information, please go to www.era.noaa.gov/information/funding.html or contact Megan Callahan Grant (megan.callahan-grant@noaa.gov or 503.231.2213).
